The ELMAN W. CAMPBELL MUSEUM, owned by the Corporation of the Town of Newmarket and operated by the Elman W. Campbell Museum Board of Management, is a non-profit, educational institution created for the purpose of collecting, preserving, researching, studying, exhibiting and interpreting artifacts related to the social, political and economic history of the Town of Newmarket and its environs from the time of the first settlers to thirty years before present, for the benefit of residents of the Town of Newmarket and visitors from outside the Town. 

The Elman W. Campbell Museum is wheelchair accessible.

The Changing Face of Main Street 

Newmarket's Main Street is constantly evolving.  Explore the changes that have occurred over the last 150 years through photographs and maps.  Presented in partnership with the Newmarket Historical Society and Heritage Newmarket.

Heritage Art Contest - Call for entries

Announcing the call for entries for the Town of Newmarket’s 2018 Heritage Art Contest. Entries must be original two-dimensional artwork created in any medium, must focus on theheritage of the Town of Newmarket. This may include, but is not limited to, the Municipality’s culture, society, economy, history, significant events, architecture or natural environment in Newmarket’s past or present.

Submit artwork from April 16 to April 30, 2018 to the Newmarket Recreation and Culture Department at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive). Artwork will be on display the first week of May to July 31, 2018 at the Municipal Offices. The contest is open to all residents of Ontario.

A registration form must accompany the artwork available at The Elman W. Campbell Museum, the Newmarket Recreation and Culture Department or available online here: 

Victorian Mother's Day Tea

Bring your Mother and enjoy an old-fashioned afternoon in a historical setting! Presented by the Friends of the Museum. Includes a variety of teas, old-fashioned sandwiches and sweets served on vintage china. Suitable for ages 12+.

Create a Victorian Costume 

Learn about historic fabrics and see examples from Museum collections. Discover heritage patterns, find out how to source fabrics, how to put together materials from the thrift shop and pattern availability.  Consult with an experienced re-enactment seamstress on how to use the patterns to create your own Victorian costume.  Suitable for men and women 18+.

Date: May 19 and 26

Cost: $100/participant, 2-day course.

An Evening with the Stars 

The York Simcoe Amateur Astronomers (YSAA) in partnership with the Elman W. Campbell Museumwill be hosting an "Evening with the Stars" in George Richardson Park.YSAA will set up various types of telescopes for public viewing. June 16 (rain date June 23) will be an excellent night for viewing Venus, Jupiter & Saturn, all of which will be prominent that evening.  Before SUNSET Jupiter will be visible to the naked eye and some of its moons may also be visible with the aid of a telescope. Mercury will also be visible for a short time. YSAA members will be on hand for guidance, instruction and will have interesting anecdotes and information to share.Bring chairs and blankets and join us outdoors for "An Evening with the Stars".

Canada Day Open House 

Join us at the Elman W. Campbell Museum for our Canada Day Open House. Special displays, demonstrations and lots to do in the downtown core.Free admission.

Rebel Heartland 

A re-enactment of the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion, in which Newmarket played a vital role.  The ARCH Committee, comprised of the Newmarket Historical Society, Heritage Newmarket, and the Elman W. Campbell Museum, will present a re-enactment and encampment at Fairy Lake park on September 22 and 23, 2018.  The event will involve an encampment of military re-enactors, sutlers, vendors, and craftspeople.  On Saturday, the rebels will recruit followers at the Farmers Market and on Main Street to hear William Lyon Mackenzie's speech encouraging armed rebellion against the colonial government.  This will be followed by a march down Main Street, to be met by the militia and dispersed.  In the afternoon, the rebels will encounter the militia at Montgomery's Tavern in Fairy Lake Park and a battle will follow.  Samuel Lount and Peter Matthews will attempt to flee but will be apprehended and turned over to the Lieutenant-Governor, who will order their execution.  The "hanging" will take place in front of the Old Town Hall.  On Sunday, social life in the colony will be represented by demonstrations, a church service, a boxed lunch social, and a dance.

Join us on Saturday, September 29 for our Culture Days open house.  New exhibit: Quilts Old and New. Try a museum history hunt and go on a self-guided tour of historic Main Street. Free admission. Join us for a howling good time with games, craft, costume parade and a spooky story. Suitable for ages 4-10. Pre-registration required.

Gallery of Festive Trees 2018

November 17 – December 29

The Elman W. Campbell Museum presents a Gallery of Festive Trees to celebrate the holiday season.  The Royal Family celebrated the holiday season with Christmas trees even before the custom became popular.  Whether your style is Victorian, Edwardian, or Retro, there's something to inspire everyone!  Opens the day of the Newmarket Santa Claus Parade!  

Cost: Free admission.


Christmas Gift Shop Sale Fundraiser at the Musuem 

Get a jump on your Christmas shopping.  Find unique gifts, antiques, glassware, Christmas decorations, home décor and much more all on sale at the Elman W. Campbell Museum. Cash only please. Presented by the Friends of the Museum.  All proceeds benefit the museum.
