Safe Winter Driving Tips

  • Check tires: Ensure that your vehicle is equipped to drive in the snow. If possible, have snow tires installed on your vehicle or at least check for sufficient tread and proper tire pressure.
  • Increase visibility: Always have your lights on and clear all snow and ice from your vehicle. Wiper blades should be checked and replaced if necessary.
  • Fill up on fluids: Make sure all your fluids are topped up and keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Communicate: Always let someone know where you are heading and an estimated time of arrival. If you have access to a cell phone, take one with you on longer drives.
  • Drive smart: Slow down and pay attention to the road and other drivers. Anticipate other drivers' actions.
  • Be prepared: It is a good idea to carry an emergency kit in your trunk. Items to include are: booster cables, shovel, flares, a candle and matches, a flashlight and survival blanket.

Being prepared for sudden weather changes may save you a lot of grief. Take the time now to get ready winter driving. For more information about road safety, please visit the York Regional Police website and click on save a life.
