Newmarket students discover the story of a green town
NEWMARKET, Ontario, May 28, 2008 In celebration of Canadian Environment Week (June 1 to 7), all Grade 1 students in the Town of Newmarket will receive a copy of Noreen & the story of a green town next week, the first storybook ever produced by the Town of Newmarket.
Children are the driving force behind environmental change, says Mayor Tony Van Bynen. This book highlights Newmarkets environmental initiatives in a way that is appealing to readers of all ages. It is our hope that the storybook will raise awareness about Newmarkets environmental bylaws and programs with the student and their parents as well.
The book captures a day-in-the-life of Newmarkets environmental heroine Noreen as she journeys through Newmarket one of Canadas most environmentally-progressive communities. Through a cast of eco-conscious characters, including Binny the Green Bin and Lucy the Ladybug, Newmarkets environmentally-based bylaws and green initiatives are brought to life.
By getting this book into the schools and sharing this story, were teaching children the importance of environmental protection and sustainability, says Ward 3 Councillor Victor Woodhouse. It is our goal to reach the students with Newmarkets environmental messages in a fun, compelling and entertaining way.
Mayor Van Bynen and members of Council will be visiting various schools throughout Newmarket during the month of June to sit down and personally share this story with Grade 1 classes.
Copies of the storybook will be delivered to all Grade 1 students in Newmarket during Canadian Environment Week. The storybook will also be available at the Newmarket Public Library (438 Park Avenue) and limited copies are available upon request at the Town of Newmarket Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive) or by calling 905-895-5193.
