Peter Love presents certificate in recognition of Newmarket’s EcoLogic Homes

NEWMARKET, Ontario, November 7, 2008 – Yesterday, Peter Love, Ontario’s Chief Energy Conservation Officer, presented the Town of Newmarket and Rodeo Fine Homes with a certificate in recognition of their partnership to build EcoLogic, Canada’s greenest residential community.

“This initiative exemplifies what we stand for and value as a community” says Mayor Tony Van Bynen. “The fact that we have guests who have travelled all the way from Michigan to visit our EcoLogic development is a testament to what a significant accomplishment this is for the Town of Newmarket.”

Peter Love, along with representatives from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Rodeo Fine Homes, visitors from Green Built Michigan, members of the media and Town of Newmarket Council and staff were provided an advanced tour of one of the EcoLogic homes, which is now more than 80 per cent complete. The tour was part of a trade mission hosted by CMHC to share best practices in environmentally sustainable design.

"In my just-released 2008 annual report, I call on all Ontarians to 'be the change to a culture of conservation'," says Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer Peter Love. "Newmarket's Ecologic project demonstrates that we can make changes that will lead us to that culture and to achieving some of the toughest conservation targets in North America."

The EcoLogic development is the first residential development in Canada to be built entirely to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum specifications. These homes will achieve and exceed specific environmental targets, including a 50 per cent reduction in household water draws, a 35 per cent reduction in overall discharge flows and a 60 per cent reduction in solid waste, greenhouse gas production and energy consumption compared to conventional homes.

"Rodeo Fine Homes has built a reputation for excellence in energy-efficient green construction, and we're very proud of that,” says Frank Mauro, owner of Rodeo Fine Homes. “The EcoLogic development is proof that urban communities can be environmentally friendly. More importantly, it's proof that people want them to be environmentally friendly. Homeowners today are very eco-conscious, and Rodeo is happy to accommodate them."

Construction on the 34-unit EcoLogic community began in May 2008. The media will be invited to tour the completed homes when the first homeowner takes possession in January 2009.
