Town of Newmarket

Heritage Conservation District Proposal Lower Main Street

Under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act, a municipal council may designate areas worthy of preservation as heritage conservation districts. Since 1980, 90 heritage conservation districts have been designated by municipal councils across Ontario. Six of these are in York Region.

The Town of Newmarket has taken a series of steps toward protecting, enhancing and revitalizing Lower Main Street South. The efforts include:

  • completing a beautification program for the Lower Main Street South roadway and boulevard and Market Square;
  • offering a comprehensive set of financial incentive programs in support of building improvements on the street; and,
  • providing professional design advice to property owners and business owners at the concept stage of an improvement project.

Town Council decided to proceed through a process to establish a heritage conservation district for Lower Main Street South. The heritage conservation district study, begun in the fall of 2008 by George Robb Architect, builds on the heritage improvement plan from 2005 and the community improvement plan from 2001.
