Fun summer events will make Newmarket sizzle!

NEWMARKET, Ontario, June 27, 2008 - Newmarket is heating up, and you don't want to miss any of the hot events the Town is offering this summer.Image

Kanata Festival: Celebrate Canada's birthday at Newmarket's annual Kanata Festival with a variety of free events:

On Friday, June 27, check out the Newmarket Wheelfest: Car, Truck & Bike Show starting at 6 p.m. at the Ray Twinney Complex (100 Eagle St. W.). Then at 7 p.m. cars cruise through town to Doug Duncan Dr. for a concert at 8 p.m. Wheelfest will continue on Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Ray Twinney Complex.

On Tuesday, July 1, begin your Canada Day with a pancake breakfast at the Newmarket Community Centre (200 Doug Duncan Drive) from 8 a.m. - 12 noon ($3 per serving). The Town will host Kanata Festival activities at Fairy Lake Park (Water Street) from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Newmarket Citizens Band will begin performing at 7:30 p.m. at George Richardson Park (Bayview Parkway), and then stay to see sparks fly during the grand finale, the annual Fireworks Extravaganza, beginning at dusk (10 p.m.).

Kids in the Square: Kids in the Square is fun for the whole family! Enjoy an hour of free family entertainment in historic downtown Newmarket every Tuesday from July 8 - August 23, from 7 - 8 p.m. at Market Square (between Botsford Street and Park Avenue). Remember to bring a blanket or lawn chair. In inclement weather, the show relocates to the Old Town Hall (460 Botsford Street).

Music in the Park: Enjoy the sounds of summer as a variety of local entertainers showcase their talent at Fairy Lake Park (Water Street) on Sunday and Wednesday evenings from July 6 - August 20 at 7 - 8:30 p.m. All performances are free and weather permitting.

Newmarket Fiddle and Step Dance Festival: On Saturday, July 12, bring your chair to Market Square (Botsford St.) and enjoy the Fiddlefest Free Outdoor Concert. The evening will include performances by:

Cat 'N The Fiddle (family show) at 6:30 p.m.
Square Dance in the Square (all ages) at 7:15 p.m.
Gypsygrass Band (all ages) at 8 p.m. Food and beverages available

BBQ & Dance at Newmarket Seniors' Meeting Place (474 Davis Dr.): On Friday, July 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. From 8 p.m. - midnight, enjoy a Fiddle & Step Dance Performance by Emily & Friends, with a D.J. and dancing to follow. Price is $15 for adults, and $12 for seniors and children under 12 years of age.

Newmarket Fiddle and Step Dance Competition: On Saturday, July 19 at the Newmarket Community Centre (200 Doug Duncan Drive). The competition begins at 9 a.m. and the Fiddle and Step Dance Grand Championships begin at 8 p.m. For more information, please visit www.fiddlefest.ca.

'La Piazza' Concert: Sanctuary International Day Spas, in conjunction with the Town of Newmarket, VPAN, and Main Street BIA, presents 'La Piazza' concert featuring the musical styles of Quartetto Gelato on Sunday, July 20 at Market Square (Botsford St.). The concert will start at 7 p.m. under the tent (rain or shine). Garlic is Great Festival: Get ready to experience the Imagewonderful world of garlic at the Farmer's Market (200 Doug Duncan Drive) on Saturday, August 16 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Enjoy cooking demonstrations, live entertainment and everything garlic! For a "world-class" experience, you can also visit International Day on Main Street from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Newmarket Rotary Ribfest at Fairy Lake Park.

Newmarket Jazz & Blues Festival: This August, jazz up the summer with free concerts presented by The Town of Newmarket and North Newmarket Lions Club. All concerts begin at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, August 20, at Fairy Lake Park (Water St.)
Thursday, August 21, at George Richardson Park
Friday, August 22, at Market Square (Botsford St.)
Saturday, August 23, at Market Square (Botsford St.)

Moonlight Movies: Enjoy a free outdoor movie under the stars beginning at dusk (approx. 8:15-8:45 p.m.) on a huge inflatable screen (Thursday nights in August):
August 7 - "The Wizard of Oz" at Dr. Margaret Arkinstall Park, 161 Sawmill Valley Dr. (Terry Fox School)
August 14 - College Manor Park, College Manor Dr. (Premier Movie TBA)
August 21 - "Cars" at Rogers Park, 170 London Rd. (Behind Canadian Martyrs School)
August 28 - "E.T" at Market Square, Botsford St. (across from 460 Botsford St.)

Bring a chair or blanket and in case of inclement weather, alternate locations will be the Ray Twinney Complex (August 7 only), and the Newmarket Community Centre (August 14, 21, and 28).

York Shakespeare Festival - July 15 - August 24
2008 Newmarket Rotary Ribfest - August 16-17
