20032004 Accessibility Plan
People with disabilities represent a significant and growing part of our population. According to Statistics Canada, approximately 1.9 million Ontarians have disabilities about 16 per cent of the population. Disability tends to increase with age and in two decades it is estimated that 20 per cent of the population will have disabilities. Enhancing the ability of people with disabilities to live independently and contribute to the community will have positive effects on future prosperity in Newmarket.
The intent of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) is to improve opportunities for people with disabilities through the identification, removal and prevention of barriers. The ODA requires that municipal governments and other public sector organizations review their policies, programs and services through the development of annual accessibility plans.
In addition, the Town of Newmarkets 2003 Corporate Strategic Plan includes a focus on providing a high quality of life for residents and the adoption and implementation of the Accessibility Plan supports this vision by improving accessibility and mobility for the Towns residents.
