Town of Newmarket

Rear facade presentation

Is the east side of Main Street South on the cusp of a renaissance?

Newmarket's new downtown urban park, Newmarket Riverwalk Commons is now open! This park, already a favourite of residents and visitors alike, has become Newmarket's premiere park and is attracting more visitors than ever to Newmarket's downtown core.

Previously home to parking lots and an old community arena, this 8.4 acre park on the east side of the Holland River is reshaping the downtown Newmarket experience. It is also bringing a renewed focus to the east side of Main Street - a once inconspicuous area of town. This means that the rear facades of the buildings on Main Street south and the open spaces along the river's west bank are truly on display for the first time in decades.

On Thursday, March 24, the Town of Newmarket -- together with Architect Peter Stewart and Heritage Planner Paul Dilse -- hosted a meeting for building owners in this area of Main Street South who are interested in leveraging their proximity to the new park.

At this meeting, attendees were presented with artistic renderings designed to showcase the potential of the area between Water Street and the municipal steps opposite Park Avenue. The presentation can be viewed here.
