AMO So You Want to Run for Council Webinar

Running for a seat on Council can be relatively simple. The rules that govern who can run and how to run an election campaign can be found in any Municipal Clerk’s office in Ontario. But, from the moment you file your nomination form your life will change! There are questions you need the answers to and this new course from AMO can help you. Course content covers: 

  • Reasons That You Should and Should Not Run for Council; 
  • What You Should Know Before You Run for Office; 
  • Dealing with the Media; 
  • Techniques for Working with Others; 
  • The Roles of Council Members and Staff; 
  • What are the powers and influence of municipal government?

Community Open House
You're invited to a Community Open House hosted by the Town of Newmarket on Tuesday, February 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive). The Community Open House will showcase some of the Town’s current programs and initiatives including the Municipal Election, as well as highlight future projects for Newmarket. 2018 Newmarket Home & Lifestyle Show
From April 6 to 8, 2018 the Newmarket Elections Team will be at the 2018 Newmarket Home and Lifestyle Show at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle Street W) to talk all things election. Stop by booth #125 on Friday April 6 from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday April 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday April 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $5 per person and kids under 12 are free! Municipal Election Information Session

A joint Election Information Session will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the York Region Administrative Centre located at 17250 Yonge Street beginning at 5 p.m. for all parties interested in running for Municipal Office. The content at this session will cover the following:  

  • Roles and responsibilities of elected officials, staff and Third Party Advertisers 
  • Eligibility rules 
  • Nomination process 
  • Campaign finances 
  • Compliance audit 
  • Voters’ list and voting proxy 
  • Scrutineers 
  • Recounts 
  • Resources
Webinar for Third Party Advertisers
On April 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and April 23 from 6 to 8 p.m., the Ministry of Municipal Affairs will be offering webinars focused on the rules pertaining to Third Party Advertisers. These webinars will serve as an opportunity for Third Party Advertisers to become familiar with new rules.

In-person Campaign Finance (Refresher) Sessions
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs will be offering In-person Campaign Finance (Refresher) Sessions. These sessions will provide an opportunity for Candidates and Third Party Advertisers to refreseh their understanding of Campaign Finance Rules. The sessions will be located across the GTHA and interested individuals can choose to attend the session that is most convenient to them. The dates, times and locations are as follows:
  • Tuesday, August 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Town of Whitby - Brooklin Community Centre and Library (8 Vipond Road)
  • Thursday, August 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the City of Toronto - Metro Hall, Room #308/309 (55 John Street)
Webinar Campaign Finance (Refresher) Session

In addition to the in-person campaign finance sessions, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs will be hosting webinars on the same topic. The Town is currently working to ensure there are spaces available to display the webinar sessions for local interested participants to join. The date and time is as follows:

  • Tuesday, August 14 from 4 to 8 p.m.

  • Thursday, September 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the City of Hamilton - Council Chambers, City Hall (71 Main Street W)
  • Monday, September 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Region of Peel - Council Chambers, 5th floor, Suite A (10 Peel Centre Drive)
  • Tuesday, September 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at County of Simcoe - Simcoe County Museum (1151 Highway 26)
