Election Sign Related Complaints

Complaints concerning election signs should be directed through the Town of Newmarket's Customer Service Department at:

905-895-5193 (Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) (after hour calls will be sent to an answering service)

Complaints concerning stolen or defaced election signs should be directed to the York Regional Police non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423.

Election Sign Enforcement

The Town of Newmarket will be conducting inspections regularly as needed. Town staff will also be conducting weekend enforcement throughout the election. If the sign placement is causing a health and safety issue enforcement will be immediate.

We will notify each candidate once by email regarding placement of signs in contradiction of Regional and Municipal sign by-laws prior to initial removal. Following this, all illegally placed signs will be removed without any notification and fees will apply.

During the week before the election there will be no notification provided to candidates regarding removal of illegally placed signs regardless of whether they have had an prior violations or not. ​

​Information to be made public

For those candidates who provided consent, the Town of Newmarket will make available to the public on request a tally of the signs removed per candidate.

The tally will be a table which shows the number of election signs removed where the placement was in violation of the rules and where signs are removed but there was no violation (eg.: damaged, fallen over).
