The BASE Program is a recreation program that allows a diverse group participants to experience a wide range of activities, focussing on creativity, physical fitness, life-skill development, literacy and socialization. Guest visitors, themes and outings are planned monthly and are added to further the enjoyment and engagement of our participants.

Our Locations:

Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday: Recreation Youth Center & Sk8 Park (56 Charles Street, Newmarket)

Hours of Operation:

Monday - Friday 8:30-3:30

Ratio:

The BASE functions at a 1:5 staff to participant ratio. Participants requiring a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio can be accommodated at an additional charge. Participants requiring a 1:1 support will be required to provide their own support person.

PA Day Program:

Students will enjoy an enriched day of activities. The day will include a mix of recreational fitness, lifestyle skill-development, literacy, crafts and games. Participants should dress in active wear and bring a (nut-free) lunch, snacks, and indoor shoes. An All About Me form is required to be completed. Ratio is 1:5. Additional support  is available.

The BASE Summer Camp

Youth and adults with special needs will enjoy a variety of activities including physical fitness, outdoor activities, swimming, games, music, arts & crafts, and science discovery.  The program will offer centre based activity choices to allow flexibility and an opportunity to focus on personal interests and development. A weekly out trip or guest presenter will be planned.

The fee is based on 1:5 staff ratio. Participants requiring additional support may provide their own support person or request staff support for an additional fee. Families are required to complete an All About Me package and provide an IEP and Safety Plan. A pre-camp meeting will be booked in May or June to discuss individual needs and interests. Registrations may be completed at this time.

Participants may choose to enjoy a full week camp experience, or register  1 or 2 days weekly through the summer in The Base Summer Days.

Registration closes 10 days prior to the beginning of each camp week.

A Day at The BASE

On Mondays and Thursdays the BASE program can be found enjoying all that the Magna Center has to offer. The program utilizes the swimming pools, ice rinks and walking track as part of their daily programming. As the weather gets warmer, they have the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy the local walking trails, playgrounds and sports fields.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays are spent at the Recreation Youth Center & Sk8 Park! Here, participants have access to a gym for physical fitness activities and group games, a kitchen to practice their culinary skills and perform science experiments and a lobby full of leisure activities like pool, ping pong and air hockey! As part of daily programming, participants have the opportunity to tap into their creativity during Adult Hobbies & Crafts and rock out during Music & Rhythm, where they participate in drum circles, karaoke and musical games.

BASE in the Community:

Participants in the BASE program will have ample opportunity to get out into the community. Trips to places such as Upper Canada Mall, local restaurants, trampolining and bowling are planned on a monthly basis and are a fun way to encourage social skills, road safety, etiquette and transit training. The Youth Center's central location makes getting around town easy for the participants who can be found exploring the Tom Taylor trail, checking out the stores along Main Street, finding fun and adventure in books at the library and having picnics in Fairy Lake.
