In-Street Bollard Pilot Project

In 2016, Newmarket's Speed Management Program launched a pilot project on Savage Road and Ivsbridge Boulevard. Flexible bollards are installed on the roadway to create a visual "road diet" with the goal of slowing down vehicular traffic. One center bollard and one bollard close to each curb are installed to create a visual narrowing of the road for drivers. The bollards are removed prior to winter months for snowplough operations and re-installed in the spring.  These bollards are designed to flex upon impact which mitigate potential damage to cars and not slow down emergency vehicles. The in-street bollard project was expanded in 2017 by installing additional bollards on Sawmill Valley Drive and Sandford Street. Each of these new locations have two sets of bollards that were strategically placed to allow motorists to spot both sets from a distance, elongating the visual "road diet".

Radar boards seen around Newmarket

The Town of Newmarket uses radar speed boards as part of our Speed Management Program. These boards can be seen around different areas of Town in the form of a trailer, or a sign mounted to a pole. When a vehicle approaches one of these signs, the digital display will come to life, showing the driver their speed. If the driver's speed is greater than the posted speed limit for that street, the display will start to flash, reminding the driver to rethink their speed and slow down.  In 2017, Newmarket expanded its radar board program by acquiring 7 new radar boards; one for each Ward. These new radar boards are powered by solar panels and installed at a location for approximately a month. The speed data collected by these boards will be available on our website as it comes available.
