The Town of Newmarket is responsible for identifying damaged sidewalks and curbs for repair through our annual sidewalk and curb review program. This program begins in May and continues until the end of September. All deficiencies identified are catalogued and scheduled for additional monitoring and/or repair in subsequent years. For example, deficiencies catalogued in 2015 will be repaired by our independent contractor in 2016.

If you have identified and would like to report a damaged sidewalk or curb, please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1.     My sidewalk and/or curb is damaged, can someone from the Town come out to repair it?

Please report sidewalk and/or curb deficiencies to the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193. Your request will be reviewed and your area assessed by the maintenance coordinator. If a repair is required, it will be scheduled accordingly.  We will make every effort to complete the repairs soon after they are reported.  However, some repairs may not be completed until the following year.

2.     I am planning to repave my driveway and would like to find out if the sidewalk and or curb fronting my property will be repaired this year.

Please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193 for more information and to find out whether the sidewalk and/or curb fronting your property will be repaired this year.

If you believe that your sidewalk and/or curb needs to be repaired, and would like to make a special request for an assessment, please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.

Assessment requests must be submitted before May 1st.  This will allow adequate time to assess and add the location to the contractor's list, if required.  Deficiencies identified during assessments completed after May 1st will likely be deferred to the following year.  As a result, we cannot guarantee that repairs needed to facilitate your project will be completed during the year they are requested.

3.     My driveway is getting repaved and the contractor will not perform any work until the Town replaces the sidewalk and/or curb. Can the Town send out a crew to replace the sidewalk and/or curb?

Sidewalks and curbs are scheduled for repair based on their condition assessment completed during the previous year.  For example, damaged sidewalks identified during the annual sidewalk review program in 2015 are repaired in 2016.

If you would like to make a special request to have your address placed on the Town's list for a sidewalk and/or curb assessment, please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.

4.     My car bottoms out on the sidewalk. Can the Town send someone to lower the sidewalk?

Winter months can cause havoc on sidewalks and curbs. The freeze and thaw cycles experienced in Newmarket can sometimes displace the sidewalk and curbs which results in higher sidewalk and/or curb elevations and reduced clearance for automobiles.

By the end of May, if the sidewalk and/or curb have not settled and an assessment by the Town is required, please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.

5.     The water on my sidewalk is not draining.  It freezes overnight and can become hazardous.

If the sidewalk in front of your property is pooling water, it may have heaved during the recent frost event. This is a common challenge we face every year during the winter months and can be seen throughout Newmarket. By the end of May, if the sidewalk has not settled and an assessment by the Town is required, please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.

Please note that residents are responsible for maintaining sidewalks located along their property in accordance to By-law 1996-38 during the freeze/thaw cycles.

6.     When will repairs for the sidewalk or curb begin?

Deficiencies identified by the sidewalk or curb review program are catalogued and scheduled for repair the following year. For example, damaged sidewalks identified in 2015 are repaired in 2016.

If you would like to report a damaged sidewalk and/or curb, please contact our Customer Services department at 905-895-5193 for review.

7. Who performs the sidewalk and or curb repairs?

An independent contractor hired by the Town of Newmarket performs sidewalk and/or curb repairs. Scheduling of repairs is determined completely by the independent contractor. The Town of Newmarket does not have any control over the repair schedule.
